Simon Field

I am Chief Technology Officer (Director,
IM Strategies) for the Office for National
Statistics
- the UK government department responsible for
providing statistical services to the nation, and registration
of births, deaths and marriages for England and
Wales.
I remain technology director of Matching Systems
Limited,
a company I co-founded in 2003. The company specialises in
advanced matching technology, with a particular focus on
complex products and services, such a financial services.
Before joining ONS, I developed its core product, the Matching
Systems Engine.
I have also developed and maintain a number of web sites,
including a wiki-based site for the Honorary Consulate of
Switzerland in Wales, www.SwissInWales.org.
From 1996 until 2003, I was manager of the e-business
Research Group at IBM's Zurich Research Laboratory in
Rueschlikon. The team pioneered new matchmaking technology,
and also led the successful EU project, Crossflow.
More than 20 years ago I built a clavichord,
from a kit designed by John Barnes. The start of my love
affair with the clavichord began. Since my return to the
UK, I have been investigating the potential for native xml
database technology to help the storage and analysis of data
about the world's historical keyboard instruments on behalf of the British
Clavichord Society and the University of Edinburgh. Details of my progress can be
found here.
